PRESS RELEASE
Open Discussion:
Lessons learnt from the success in Cyprus of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Invest in Education”
The Cyprus Volunteers’ Team of Supporters to the European Citizens’ Initiative “Invest in Education” and the Philosophy Association of the University of Cyprus, organise the above event under the patronage of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus on Saturday, 16th May 2015, (09:00–13:20 at the University of Cyprus (Amphitheatre Β108, Council –Senate Building A.G. Leventis, UCY Campus, Aglantzia).
The event is coorganised by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) office in Cyprus, as the main sponsor, and the Cyprus Youth Council (CYC), with the support of the Think-Tank DIKTIO for Reform in Greece and Europe.
The main objectives of the event are the presentation of an overview of the success of the Initiative in Cyprus and the launching of a public consultation around current educational issues. Furthermore, besides the main pillars around which the petition focused – better education and increased spending on research development – the main conclusion that we would like to put forward is that equally important to the securing of the required support statements is the active involvement of tens of local citizens, which resulted in a European first and at the same time in the foundation of a Forum of Active Citizens, which will pursue the goals of the Initiative further, despite the fact that the overall goal of securing 1000000 signatures was not met.[i]
Main speakers at the event, among other distinguished scientists, will be two outstanding political personalities, the President of DIKTIO for Reform in Greece and Europe Ms Anna Diamantopoulou, former EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs & Equal Opportunities and ex Minister of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs of Greece, and Ms Androulla Vassiliou, former EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. Furthermore, the event programme features presentations by distinguished guests from the academic and European fields, on topics related to Educational issues in Cyprus and Europe. The public consultation that will follow, will bring to the forth the key role of active citizenship in the modern European world.
The working languages of the event will be Greek, Turkish and English with simultaneous interpretation, thus highlighting the importance of multiculturalism and multilingualism.
